Medical and business professionals first recognized the requirement for prepaid health plan in 1939 and established the first Blue Cross Plan in Manitoba, a not-for-profit health and travel insurance provider. In the 1960s they introduced Medicare, a product to support a government program and help Canadians deal with the increasing price of prescribed medication.
Today, they operate in every province of Canada offering individual and group health benefits, dental benefits, travel health insurance and disability income plans. Blue Cross is dedicated and is continuously working to improve the health and wellness of the Canadians it serves. As of December 31, 2012, the Company had consolidated assets of $544.1 million and a surplus of $289.8 million.
